Smart Lighting

Welcome to our bright side of the internet.  So, what is Smart Lighting?  Since 2014, it seems that every technology giant is manufacturing everything to be “Alexa Ready” or “Google Compatible“.  Smart Lighting is no exception to this trend.

No longer are you restricted to just on and off, controlled by the nearby switch.

Now, you can change the colour of the light, turn it on and off when you’re halfway around the world, set it to come on to a schedule, or turn off when you say the words “goodnight”.

To work, smart lights need to connect to a hub that allows you to control them from your smartphone, tablet or a gadget like the Amazon Echo and Google Home. Or, you can connect them directly to your smartphone, with no hub, if the system allows.

Smart Lighting Buying Advice and Tips

Smart lighting is controlled from an app on your phone, tablet or through your virtual assistant, like Google Home, Amazon Alexa or the Apple HomePod.   Once you have completed setup, you open a world of smart lighting fantasia.  You can dim you lights, set timers and even change the mood and colour of a room.

What do I need?

All you need is an internet connection, a control hub (also know as Home Hubs) and a smart phone.   As a result, you will have control of your smart light bulbs from anywhere in the world. You can make it look like someone is at home if you’re on holiday, running late or pop out for he evening.  Most smart lights need to be linked up to a home hub that lets you control all your smart devices from one smart phone app.

What can I expect?

Well, smart lighting is not just an on and off switch. Certain smart lights allow you to dim, change colours or even flick between cool and warm white light tones to set the mood. A selection of Philips Hue and Hive lights allow you to choose from a whopping 16 million different shades. So, if you’re wanting to get the party started or you’re snoozing on the sofa, you can set the light to suit your night.

Compatibility

Whatever light fitting you’ve already got at home, it should be a straightforward swap to a smart light as they have a range of different fittings. If your chosen light is a simple screw fit, there will also be a bayonet version available or it’ll come with a bayonet adapter. There’s a bunch of smart lights that’ll fit in a spotlight too.

Smart doesn’t just stop with a bulb. You can customise your home with a range of cool lighting. Get creative with light strips that attach to any solid surface and sync with your music and movies or add a motion sensor to trigger the lights when you enter the room.
